Rotsethornet

Volda's sleeping beauty

Rotsethornet as seen from Panoramavegen

It is the first thing you see when you drive into Volda from the airport: the local mountain, pudding-shaped and quiet, stretching towards the sky behind the last houses in the south of Volda. While Rotsethornet is cursed by some in winter – after all, it decimates the already few hours of sunshine for most of Volda – it challenges almost every international student and also the locals of Volda in the other months: the hike to the summit of Rotsethornet is not wrongly regarded by some international students as a test that you have to have mastered in order to be able to call yourself a real Voldarian - even if only for a limited time.

Nevertheless, the mountain should not be underestimated. The shorter way up is peppered with ropes and steel chains, which you can use to move up the sometimes steep rock face – definitely not for those with a fear of heights. Alternatively, you can take the longer route over the ridge facing away from Volda, which includes a section alongside the lake to the south-east of Volda. Here, too, there is a single section where you have to climb up or down a steep slope along a rope. However, no matter how you get to the top, the view is always breathtaking. A view like that of a seagull rewards the effort that Rotsethornet demands of you time and time again.

Even for the shorter hikes that you might do in Volda, always have in mind that the mountains can be dangerous when you least expect it. Always adhere to the recommendations made by locals and familiarize yourself with the Norwegian mountain code, created by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) and the Red Cross.
