Møre og Romsdal District College Volda started out as a district college established by the Norwegian Parliament on June 19, 1969. The first students started in the fall of 1971. The university first offered courses like Norwegian, German, media studies, social work, history, ecclesiastical studies, municipal planning and management and child welfare educator.

Volda Teachers College was established in 1895, its founders were Aage Stabell and Henrik Kaarstad. In memory of Henrik Kaarstad, Volda University College decided to name the old building of the Teachers College, which is still in use today, after him. On the Kaarstad building you can still see the word "Lærarskule" in big letters, which means teacher's college in Nynorsk.

Møre og Romsdal District College Volda and Volda Teachers' College merged in 1994 – This formed Volda University College.

The new media building opened in fall 2021

Today, the university college has four departments. Department of Humanities and Teacher Education, department of Social Sciences and History, Department of Media Studies and Department of Cultural Studies. The media courses are the most popular courses at the school, with hundreds of applicants every year. Volda university college houses around 4000 students and 350 employees.
